The purpose of this committee is to define and plan for strategies that will reduce the number of vehicles on roads and bridges which serve the Outer Banks – especially during the times when they are most congested. Possibilities – suggested by the ITRE Study – include, but are not limited to:
- Changes in check-in and check-out days for seasonal rental homes;
- Limits on parking and/or parking fees;
- Share-a-ride program to provide alternative transportation for the Outer Banks workforce;
- Zoning for future mixed-use development;
- Education campaigns and incentives to encourage use of trolley-bus service -when it is implemented - and to discourage use of private vehicles;
- Improved traffic control schemes to reroute traffic in the aftermath of an accident.
