Outer Banks Transportation Project - Outer Banks Transportation Task Force
Public Transit Committee

The purpose of this committee is to plan for future trolley bus transportation on the Outer Banks. Initially this service would operate in the beach towns north of Oregon Inlet and along the old US 64 corridor on Roanoke Island during the tourist season – when the most serious congestion occurs on the Outer Banks.  In the long-term, service would be extended to Hatteras Island, Colington, and perhaps other areas; it would also operate year-round.

Beginning in January 2006, this committee worked with a consultant – Ken Hosen of KFH Group – to better define trolley bus routes and other features of the service for the Outer Banks. The contract with KFH Group provided for this work to be based on the recommendations of the ITRE Study. Mr. Hosen provides cost estimates for the service and specifications that could be used to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP). Currently, committee members anticipate that the Future Transportation Organization (which emerges from the previous committee) will procure the trolley-bus vehicles, but the public transportation service would be operated and maintained by a contractor. The report from this study was delivered in December 2006 and is currently under review by the committee.
